1. Native resolution, and why "close" isn't close
Every screen is a fixed grid of pixels — 1179 × 2556 on an iPhone 16, 1440 × 3120 on a Galaxy S25 Ultra. Hand the system an image at exactly that size and each image pixel maps to one screen pixel: maximum sharpness, no interpolation.
Hand it anything else and the system resamples. Downscaling (image larger than screen) is nearly lossless: detail is averaged away gracefully. Upscaling (image smaller than screen) manufactures pixels that don't exist, which reads as softness and mush, especially along hair, text and branches. And an image at the wrong aspect ratio gets cropped by whatever the system considers the middle — rarely where your subject is.
The rule is short: compose at the exact target size, from a source at least that large. The size chart lists the native resolution of every current device, and the studio's export is always pixel-exact — it warns you if your source would need upscaling.
2. The clock owns the top third
On a modern iPhone lock screen the date sits at about 11% of the screen height, the clock's huge digits span roughly 13–24%, and the optional widget row runs to about 31%. Add the camera and flashlight buttons near the bottom and the usable canvas is a band across the middle 55% of the screen.
That has two design consequences:
- Don't put the payoff at the top. A face, a summit, a logo — anything in the top 30% will spend its life behind the time.
- Give the digits something quiet to sit on. Sky, water, bokeh, shadow. If your image is busy up there, darken it slightly — a soft top fade is invisible as an effect but transforms legibility.
In the studio, switch the preview overlay to Lock screen to see the real geometry over your image (the clock even shows the current time), then raise Top scrim until the digits would hold. The same logic applies to Android's stacked clock — the overlay adapts per platform.
3. Parallax: why iPhone zooms your wallpaper
Set a pixel-perfect wallpaper on an iPhone and it still looks slightly cropped. That's Perspective Zoom: iOS enlarges the image by roughly a tenth so it has spare pixels to slide around as you tilt the phone. The parallax motion is charming; the surprise crop is not.
You have three honest options:
- Frame for it. Keep everything that matters inside the central ~90% of the canvas. The studio's Parallax safe area guide draws exactly that box.
- Turn it off. When setting the wallpaper, tap the Perspective Zoom control (iOS 15 and earlier) or long-press the lock screen → Customize and disable the motion effect. Reduce Motion in Accessibility also disables it globally.
- Let it crop. Fine for textures, gradients and abstracts with no edges to lose — everything from the generator survives parallax by construction.
4. The depth effect, demystified
Since iOS 16, the lock screen can slide part of your photo in front of the clock — the "depth effect". It looks like magic; it's actually subject segmentation with three hard rules:
- iOS must find a subject. Portrait-style photos work best: a person, pet or object with sharp edges and strong contrast against a softer background. Flat scenes, busy textures and distant subjects fail silently.
- The subject must overlap the clock — but only its lower half. Cover the whole clock and iOS gives up and drops the effect. The studio's lock overlay makes this easy to judge: position the subject's head or peak so it grazes the bottom of the digits.
- Widgets kill it. Add any widget below the clock and the depth effect is disabled. It's one or the other, by design.
One more subtlety: the layering only reads if the clock is brighter than what's behind it. Keep the area around the digits a touch darker than your subject's highlights — Top scrim again.
5. True black and your battery
On an OLED panel each pixel emits its own light, and a truly black pixel is simply off. A predominantly-black wallpaper therefore uses measurably less display power than a bright one — the display is most phones' single biggest battery consumer.
The catch: "almost black" doesn't count. A very dark grey (#111) still drives every pixel. For the battery effect you want genuine #000000, which is exactly what the studio's Fit mode produces: your image floats at its natural aspect ratio on a pure-black field. It's also simply a good look — the frame disappears into the bezel.
Dark aurora-style generations on deep bases get most of the benefit while being more interesting than flat black.
6. PNG or JPEG, and the banding problem
PNG is lossless: every pixel you composed, exactly. The cost is file size — a 4K wallpaper can run 10–20 MB. JPEG at quality 90+ is visually identical for photographs at a fraction of the size, and it's what most people should use for photos.
The exception is smooth gradients: skies, studio backdrops, generated fades. JPEG's compression quantises gentle transitions into visible stripes ("banding"), and even PNG can band if the gradient spans few brightness steps. The classic fix is the film-maker's: add a little grain. A few percent of noise dithers the transition and the stripes vanish. It's why the generator defaults to 35% grain, and why the studio's Grain slider exists at all — it's not a filter, it's a repair.
Rule of thumb: photos → JPEG 90. Gradients, flat art, anything generated → PNG, with grain if you see stripes.
7. Where to find an image worth keeping
Everything above assumes you already have an image. If you don't, the order below is roughly cheapest-and-best first, because for wallpapers it genuinely is: the constraints that matter here are resolution and a quiet upper third, not budget.
- Your own camera roll. Free, already at native resolution or better, and the only source where the depth effect reliably works, because it needs a real, separable subject. Start here.

- Unsplash, Pexels and Openverse. Free, large, and generous about personal use. Two honest caveats: their licences differ from each other and do change, so read the one on the photo you take, and the most-downloaded shots are on a great many other phones already.
Paid stock is worth it in narrower cases than the industry likes to admit: when you need a specific subject the free libraries simply do not have, when people are recognisable and you need the model release, or when the wallpaper is going into something commercial, like a device mockup or a client deck. For those, a licensed library is the safer route.
